Lincoln Elementary Library Procedures and Guidelines

Parental Restrictions

The librarian and the school committee strive to have a library collection that all students and parents consider appropriate.  Nevertheless, the District recognizes the right of parents under state law and District Policy 11IR-107 Recognizing Constitutional Freedoms in Public Schools, to restrict their child's access to materials the parent deems inappropriate.  However, parents do not have the right to make that determination on behalf of other parents and students.

A parent desiring to restrict their own child's access to specific library materials shall submit the request in writing (or via email) to the librarian at the school their child is currently attending.  If the material is a required part of classroom curriculum activities, the parent must follow the procedures for waiver contained in 11IR-107 Section 14.

Library Use

Each class has an assigned time one day each week.  These visits allow for instruction and the exchange of books.  Scheduled library time that is missed will not be made up.  This includes assemblies, holidays, school closures, etc.

Teachers can schedule to use the library when it is not in use.  Please see media specialist.

All computers and iPads in the library are to be used to access the library catalog or SORA.  Students will not be allowed to use them for other things unless special permission has been granted.  Students that are on other websites will lose computer privileges in the library.

Sora, an online library used by Davis School District, may be accessed by students anytime through their Office 365 account or by visiting the website www.soraapp.com/library/davisut

Behavior

Students are expected to exhibit appropriate library behavior during class and open library time. Quiet voices are expected, and no recess-type play is allowed.

Open Library 

Students may visit the library on their own to exchange books Monday-Thursday 3:20-3:40 and Friday from 1:20-1:40

Check out limits

Kindergarten students will read books in the library.

1^st one book for classroom use. The book needs to be returned before another book can be checked out.

2^nd-3^rd two books.  Books need to be returned before other books can be checked out. 

4^th-6^th three books. Books need to be returned before other books can be checked out.  

Audio Books/Playaways: Available only to 5^th and 6^th graders with no overdue books or fines.  One per student at a time.

Students in 2^nd-6^th grade will be provided with a library card for them to check out books which will be kept in the library.  Kindergarten and first grade will be checked out by the librarian. 

Book Care

Please ensure library books are well cared for while they are in your home.  Keep them away from food, liquid, small children and pets.  Store them in safe, clean locations.  Please do not mark or bend the pages.

Holds

4^th to 6^th grade students may place up to two books on hold by accessing their account on-line.  Books will be held in the library for 2 weeks. After 2 weeks, the hold will move on to the next student if it is not checked out.  Students will be notified the hold is ready by email.

Overdue Books

Books are checked out for two weeks.  Students may renew a book an indefinite number of times unless another student has the title on hold.  Overdue notices will be sent by email.  There are no fines for overdue books; however, students with late books will not be allowed to check out other books until they return the overdue items.

Lost or Damaged Books  

Per district policy, a fine is assessed if a student loses or damages a book.  The payment will be the replacement cost of the book plus a $2.00 processing fee.  The school will not accept a copy of the lost book in lieu of payment.  Payment plans may be set up with the approval of the librarian and will allow students to check-out books while paying for the lost/damaged item.  A refund will be given if the book is found within 30 days after payment is made.  After 30 days, no refund will be given.

Students on a fee waiver will still be assessed a library fine as library materials are district property.  Library fines are NON-waivable.

End-of-Year book Return

All books are to be accounted for by the student’s final visit the second to last week of school.  Students with missing or unaccounted for library materials will be assessed a fine to replace the book.

Donations

Materials donated to the library are added to our collection at the librarian's discretion.  Materials that are donated may be sold, disposed of, or given away.

Weeding

Library inventory is done at the end of every year.  Periodic evaluation of the materials will be conducted in order to maintain an up to date, relevant, diverse collection. Books that are not circulating, are outdated or have inaccurate information, encourage stereotypes or biases will be removed from the collection per the Davis District Policy.

Selection Policy

Library materials are selected to support curriculum and the needs and interests of students.  Lincoln Library selects materials based on:

·         Accuracy, timeliness, reliability, balanced views, and literary quality.

·         Award winners

·         Materials that meet the development/maturity level of students

School Library Advisory Committee/ Evaluation Committee

Lincoln Library has a school-level Library Advisory committee and a Collection Evaluation Committee that consists of no less than five members. These are under the direction of the school principal and chaired by the library media teacher. Committee members represent an equitable cross-section of school community stakeholders that may include "an administrator, department chair/or grade level teacher, parent representative, and student representative where appropriate". These committees "provide input, promote library programs, and may assist in challenges to materials at the school level".  See Section 8: School Library Media Centers: Guidelines and Procedures Davis School District

Add information about any school library events or programs.

This may include Literacy Nights, book clubs, book fairs, Book Battles, author visits, challenges or reading events. 

The Library Media DESK focuses and prioritizes the reading and information literacy skills that students need to know and be able to use to help them read and research effectively in all subjects and with a variety of technologies.
